This past fall my family traveled back to my home state of Iowa for two important birthday’s, and thus ensued a family birthday session at Yellow Smoke Park in Denison, Iowa. I am no stranger to Yellow Smoke–in fact, one of the times I was there in years past was for Mike and Rhonda’s wedding (Mike is my husband’s cousin). However, I don’t even hold a candle to the number of times Rhonda has been there. Because Rhonda is also a photographer, to say she has been there many, MANY times for photo sessions is an understatement! (You can follow her work on Facebook HERE.)
The day of the big birthday celebration was a VERY chilly late fall day, so we cut out of the party for a little while and made sure we were quick about the pictures because everyone was freezing! However, they were troopers, and I was thrilled to get to photograph this family–getting the birthday girl in front of the camera rather than her usual place behind the camera! And despite the fact that this close to winter can look rather dead and dull after the leaves have fallen, Rhonda and I both knew that given the right light and the right location, you can get some magical results. When all was said and done, three of the four headed back to the party after this birthday session–but the birthday girl and I went to look at some of her favorites spots in the park!
