I couldn’t have asked for a more meaningful session in photographing this precious grandmother, mother, and daughters combination! On so many levels, this one is close to my heart. Rebecca is a dear friend. As a mom of 8 children, she might just be one notch crazier than I am as a mother of 7, right? Well, four of her children were born not from her womb, but every bit from her heart. I remember the day she got the referral of her first adopted son, as his newborn picture quickly made it’s way to the front of her fridge as well as the front of many prayers on his behalf to come safely home. And then years later, as if her arms weren’t already full, she reached wider still to bring home 3 siblings from the other side of the world. Her home of all boys soon realized what it was like to have 2 sisters in the mix. And it wasn’t long after I had picked up my camera that I began dreaming of this very session.
Family life can often be a messy existence. And when you have 8 children to love and nurture, you can just multiply that messiness in every direction several times over. But often what truly matters most in life is hard work…and sometimes just down-right heart-wrenching. Many times it’s hard to find the beauty in the everyday chaos of life. But the beauty is there. And that is what I hoped to capture for my sweet friend as she mothers not only her 6 strapping young sons, but now her 2 beautiful daughters as well. As future stories are shared of beauty emerging from ashes, this will be among them. But for now, as she heads back into the trenches of that process–weaving her love throughout the days of laundry piles, squabbling siblings, school assignments, and countless other tasks–I hope she will pause often to see deep in her soul the beauty that a camera can only catch a glimpse of.
