Yes, the flowers are beautiful…but they will fade. The brunch reservations are wonderful…I hope the table is filled with laughter and love. The fancy diamond or piece of jewelry? Well…I have something better, trust me.
You know what I’m going to say. But before I was a photographer, I became a mother. And being a mother is one of the greatest gifts on this side of heaven I will ever receive.
Do you know what I cherish more than flowers, more than jewelry, more than just about anything tangible? Pictures. Pictures of my children, pictures of my mom with me when I was a child…pictures. On hard days, I pull out the pictures to be reminded that not all days are hard days. On crazy days, my kids and I scroll through the pictures and retell the stories with all the laughter and wild that can fill a room.
But one day I’ll have lonelier days…and I will pull out the pictures. I pull out the pictures of my grandma Sylva holding me while I’m decked out in pigtails and overalls and gripping two pieces of lefse in my hands. I pull out the pictures of my mom…both from the early days and the more recent days. And I pull out the pictures of my children….and I so treasure the ones where I am in the frame with them.
Trust me, in ten years of being a photographer and all the people that have gifted their mom a session, there has yet to be a single time where that mom or grandmother was not over the moon with her gift. It is worth the time, it is worth the effort, it is worth the investment.
It really doesn’t matter what age or stage she is in. It is all beautiful.
